Another Misty Fjords Multi Day Expedition in the record books for Southeast Exposure.
Big Thanks to Experienced Misty Kayak Guides, Kate Lyn Hill and Captain Tessa Jean Minicucci.
7 ladies, 5-Day kayak camping and paddling, with endless views, great food, good company and did we mention lots of rain?!...Were talking next level GIRLS CLUB. A memory for all to remember!
The Misty Fjords certainly lived up to their name!

Tongass National Forrest; USFS Cabins in the Misty and Ketchikan Ranger District

Winstanley Island, Looking South from the cabin
I wanted to give an overview and review of Forrest Service cabins in and around Southeast Exposure. So it seemed fitting to review the only Misty fjord Cabin that you can sea kayak out of. Winstanley Island Cabin is located 7 miles South of Punchbowl Cove kind of a long day trip to kayak out and back but a great place to start or finish a East Behm Canal paddle. We transport kayakers to Winstanley cabin for $750 depending on group size it can be as affordable as $125 a person.

Like all USFS Tongass cabins on the ocean it comes with a buoy and secure anchor. Winstanley is wood heated and a new rebuild.
Just south of the cabin is a shoal water pass that has some current and at low tide you can see the bottom maybe 15 feet deep at the narrowest part of the gap.
At the South end of the island are a bunch of rock islands. The Islands are home to a seal family and are always sighted here. Theres a petroglyph on the south point of the island!
Across from the seals and petroglyph on mainland is Winstanley creek. Ive taken steel head fisherman here in the spring. They told me that the trail was in rough shape and was especially overgrown and wet.
On the west side of the island I've spotted orca pods on more then one occasion, as well as dall porpoise. The USFS Misty Ranger district has a house barge tucked in a bay on the west side as well.
